Can Organization Be The Key To Happiness? 'Beyonce Of Decluttering' Thinks So

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Messy room? Or maybe rooms? Well it seems getting organized is very trendy these days, thanks to one best-selling author.

As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, a long line of people waited to see a different celebrity of sorts -- make that sorting. Japanese decluttering guru Marie Kondo was signing copies of her latest book "Spark Joy," which has been dubbed an illustrated master class on the art of organizing and tidying up.

Kondo apparently been called the Beyonce of decluttering.

"I call myself a self-professed organizing freak, so I'm so amazed and honored that they call me that," said Kondo.

People are mesmerized by her patented KonMari folding method. A video of the method ends with the article of clothing standing upright.

Some fans in attendance had pictures to show why they need Kondo's guidance.

"Yes, I desperately need this book," said one fan.

Kondo's approach to downsizing follows a specific order: first clothes, then books, paperwork, then miscellaneous items such as toiletries and kitchen items before moving on to sentimental objects like photos.

But it's not just about cleaning up physical space, it's also about cleaning up emotional space, keeping only the things that "spark joy."

"It's appreciating what you've had in your life but not holding on," said Ayelet Sela.

"The goal of my message is not to discard everything that surrounds you, but instead to really figure out what makes you happy," said Kondo.

She urges people to quietly thank the things they get rid of.

"It's something that's not just about organizing; it's really about what you want in life, what your priorities are, and having a joyful life," one fan said.

To make things even easier, Kondo's launching an app later this spring to help people clean up. Kondo also stars in a decluttering TV show.

Her followers believe once their homes are in order, their lives will be too.
