Connecticut Navy Base Clawing To Control Feral Cat Problem

GROTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Navy base in Connecticut is cracking down on its feral cat problem, as the felines reportedly stalk the campus and cause issues for workers.

Officials say anyone caught feeding the felines at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton will face disciplinary action. Sailors who disobey could face a range of actions as outlined by the U.S. Code of Military Justice. Civilian workers also could be punished, The Day reports.

Base spokesman Chris Zendan says feral cats pose a public health threat and are also a risk to the base's operation.

According to The Day, base officials do not know how many cats currently convene on the base.

Base officials previously reached out to local animal shelters and convened a "feral cat summit" last year to research solutions.

The cats have been spotted near where submarines are docked and there are many storage facilities.
