3 Injured When Taxi Jumps Curb On East Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Three people were injured when a taxi jumped a curb on the East Side Thursday morning.

The taxi climbed the curb and struck a building at First Avenue and 33rd Street at around 8:45 a.m.

Witnesses say the cab ran through a red light and smashed into the building. The cab driver and two pedestrians were hurt.

"He hit the guy, and then he came there, and his speed, it just picked up like that," one witness said.

"All the cars were stopped, this cab was just flying," said witness Chris Collins. "Took out this guy on a bicycle, swerved to his right, hit a car, swerved back over toward the bike lane, like he was about to jump the curb and take everybody out. Everybody just ran that way."

The three were taken to NYU Langone Medical Center - just across the street from the crash - for treatment. None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening.

"It was just me and this lady in the crosswalk," Collins said. "Came by, hit this lady in the right leg, flipped her up in the air. I was kind of stuck in the middle of the street trying to figure out which way he was gonna go. I moved to the left and the car went right by me, brushed my clothes as he went by, and boom, right into the wall."

It's not clear what caused the cab driver to lose control.

"It's amazing nobody got killed," one man told Sanchez.

"If it was another half a second he could've easily taken out 20 people," Collins said.
