Suspect Hits Parked Cars In Mount Vernon, Injures Woman Holding Infant, After Fleeing Police Stop

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect crashed into parked cars in Mount Vernon on Tuesday, after fleeing a stop by NYPD officers in the Bronx.

The incident took place at 5:30 p.m.

Nearby Mount Vernon police officers responded to the scene immediately, and took the driver and a passenger into custody.

A female passenger in the backseat was holding an infant at the time of the crash. The passenger suffered head trauma, and was in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center. The infant was reported as stable.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas called the accident a tragedy.

"This is a tragic accident and we are hoping that there is no loss of life. Mount Vernon extends its full cooperation to the New York Police Department and ask that people pray for the injured backseat passenger and child," Thomas said.

It is unknown why the car was being stopped.
