Transplant New Yorkers Backed Trump, Clinton In Florida Primary

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton can thank transplanted New Yorkers for their Florida primary wins Tuesday night.

CBS2's Marcia Kramer found that New Yorkers who moved to the Sunshine State backed the Republican and Democratic front-runners.

"I voted for Donald Trump because I like him. I really do trust him, believe what he says. He's not talking mumbo jumbo. He's not speaking like a politician speaks. He's the first guy that speaks my language straight forward, I think honest," Stacey Blake, who was born in Syracuse, told CBS2.

CBS2 reports Trump struck a chord with Florida voters who are transplants from New York. Don Rolston felt that Ohio Gov. John Kasich is "too wimpy" and that he turns the television off whenever Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, appears.

"I like Trump. I voted for Trump," Rolston said.

Bruce Tracht from Long Island said, "I think Donald Trump is upfront. I think Donald Trump sees the world from a perspective of economics."

On the Democratic side, Joel Patigaio of Manhattan said that Clinton was his candidate.

"Yes, I think she's the best candidate. I think she's going to make the change that we need. I think two heads are better than one. Late at night, when they're lying in bed and talking about China, they'll come up with the right answer," Patigaio told CBS2, referring to former President Bill Clinton.

Caroline Cappelin of Manhattan said, "I'm Hillary because I'm a Democrat and I believe in what she stands for and I don't like what the Republican Party is doing."

Paul Hurowitz of New City, New York, is "feeling the Bern."

"Absolutely I'm voting for Bernie Sanders … because he's the only one who's going to bring back the middle class. Everybody else concerned about the 1 percent," Hurowitz said.

CBS2 did not find any New Yorkers in Florida supporting Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who ended up suspending his presidential campaign Tuesday night.
