New Jersey Woman's Car Stolen With Mother's Ashes In Trunk

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey woman is hoping to get her mother's ashes back after her car was stolen.

CBS2's Alice Gainer reported Thursday that Llamia Walker of East Orange left the ashes of her mother in the trunk of the car when it was stolen sometime between Sunday into Monday.

"I miss my mom, a lot of the pain is still there," Walker said. "That's my mother. That's the only thing I have left of my mother."

Walker's mother died in 2013.

Walker parked her 1999 Jeep Cherokee in a lot on North 15th Street. What's puzzling to her is that the car wasn't working before it was stolen. It was sitting unused in the lot since last July.

"Someone would've had to have towed it because it didn't run and it had a flat tire, so you would have to pick it up," Walker said.

Walker said she left her mother's ashes in the car's trunk because of her kids.

"I had them in the house and because the kids were getting curious and they wanted to know what's inside of this, I took it out," Walker explained. "This is the best place for me to put it because the car's not moving. It's going to stay right here. I don't want my kids to get into it."

Walker is hoping someone will just return the ashes to the lot or the police station.

"I could never get my mother back," she said. "I could always buy a new truck."

An East Orange spokeswoman said police are investigating this as a stolen vehicle.

The lot it was parked in is private, but police said it doesn't appear the owner of the lot had Walker's car towed.

Police also said Walker did not mention the ashes in her police report.
