Firefighters Battle Three-Alarm Blaze In Elizabeth, New Jersey

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork)-- Firefighters battled to contain a three-alarm fire in New Jersey Saturday evening.

Firefighters said the building on Fulton Street went up in flames in Elizabeth around 5:30 p.m. as residents filled the streets to watch the billowing smoke.

Even with a department just blocks away, two houses were already fully engulfed when officials arrived.

Firefighters attempted to make entry but the fire was too advanced and the roofs of both homes collapsed, officials told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman.

The Red Cross is assisting the tenants from one of the buildings, the other home was abandoned.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
