Jacob DeGrom Could Miss Mets Home Opener Due To Birth Of First Child

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Jacob DeGrom might get the hook early Friday during the New York Mets home opener, not because he's getting shelled, but because he's about to be a father for the first time.

CSB2's Otis Livingston reported Thursday that the ace's wife, Stacey DeGrom, is in Florida and expecting their son any minute.

Jacob DeGrom plans to stay with the team until he gets word that his wife has gone into labor,

"My plan's to be there whenever he's born, so I'll probably be out of the ballgame. I'm still waiting to hear something," DeGrom said, adding that "it's very exciting."

If DeGrom misses the game, the most likely candidate to replace him will be Bartolo Colon.

"Hopefully the baby holds off another day or two," Mets third baseman David Wright said. "Hopefully he gets home in time to see it because I know how excited he is. If I was a Mets scout, I would look at him and try to sign him early."

"Jake's pumped up and I know he would also like to have that baby arrive and we can move on," Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters.

This won't be the last time the Mets are faced with this type of situation this season. Second baseman Neil Walker revealed he'll have a decision to make in August when his wife is due to have their first child.

Two years ago, then Met Daniel Murphy was criticized for missing the first two games of the season to be with his wife for the birth of their son.
