Ads Attempt To Guide Passengers To Proper Subway Etiquette

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Most New Yorkers are no strangers to the subway or the rude behavior that rides along with it.

"People push against you or invade your personal space," Washington Heights resident Michael de Crumpe told CBS2's Vanessa Murdock.

"When somebody has a rabbit or their entire dinner it doesn't even shock me anymore," TriBeca resident Rachel Von Waldow said.

Believe it or not, such behavior is just a sign of the times.

"It's interesting to see the same problems go on and on," Robert Del Bagno, manager of the exhibitions at the New York Transit Museum, said.

He said their new exhibit with old transportation ads in the annex at Grand Central Terminal with old transportation ads makes it obvious that the problems of the early 1900s are still problems today, and not just in the states, but around the world.

Common bad behaviors include hogging space, which many call "manspreading" now, littering, and being downright loud.

"The only thing we seem to have gotten past is smoking," Del Bagno said.

A theme that transcends time and culture: humor.

"Nobody likes to read a list of rules," he said.

Experts say more humorous ads playing off etiquette are likely in the MTA's future.
