Newark Reaches Deal To Keep Uber In Operating In City
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said Friday that he has reached a deal with ride-hailing company Uber to operate in that city.
In an emailed statement, Baraka said the agreement will "keep Uber in Newark, protect the business interests of the taxi and limousine industry and provide a boost to the city's economic development and leadership in technology."
The city and Uber had been in a public dispute recently over taxes, licensing and background checks.
In February, Newark officials said the city would start ticketing or towing Uber drivers who operated at the train station or airport, but the ban was shelved.
California-based Uber has operated largely unregulated in the state in recent years. It claims it has about 15,000 independent contractor drivers in New Jersey.
Taxi organizations say ride-hailing has significantly cut their profits.
