Police: Man Wanted In String Of Nassau Robberies Strikes Again In New Hyde Park

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police said a man wanted in a series of knifepoint holdups across Nassau County has struck again.

The latest robbery happened shortly before 10 a.m. Monday at a Subway restaurant in New Hyde Park.

A man wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket, dark sunglasses, a dark cloth across his face and gloves walked into the store armed with a large kitchen knife and demanded money, police said.

"Guy came in and busted through the door right where we are standing, right by the register. He shows her the knife, holding up this long 9-inch knife and told her give me all the money," store manager Mushammed Masin told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez.

The 20-year-old female employee handed over the cash and the suspect fled. The woman was not injured.

Police said the same man is wanted in connection with at least 10 other robberies across the county since March 1, including half a dozen Dunkin' Donut shops, other Subways, a 7-Eleven and a Carvel.

The store's surveillance cameras in the latest incident were broken. Cameras on neighboring stores on Jericho Turnpike also didn't work or were pointed in the wrong direction. But Nassau police said a nearby business captured a new image of the suspect walking in the area just before the robbery.

During Monday's incident, the suspect likely saw a wanted posted of himself that was taped to the door before entering the business, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"He does wait. He lurks around and waits for the perfect time to go in," Nassau County police Lt. Richard Leburn said.

Police said the robber targets stores with just one clerk on duty and no customers inside. They add that for the first time, the armed robber struck in the daytime just before 10 a.m. in the latest robbery. The brazen daylight attack is alarming to many in the area.

Police describe him as a black man in his mid-20s, 6 feet tall with a medium build.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
