Columbia University Student Who Ran Supper Club Out Of Apartment Asked To Move Out
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Columbia University student who ran a supper club from his school-owned apartment has been told to leave.
The Wall Street Journal reports that senior Jonah Reider was asked to leave the apartment where he served guests at a single, four-seat table. At one point, the waiting list reportedly reached 1,000 people.
The subleased home of the Pith, as the club was called, was a professor's Columbia-owned apartment. The Journal says the professor asked the 22-year-old student from Massachusetts to leave by May 31, on orders from university housing administrators.
"I thought I was doing really well," he told the Wall Street Journal, "but I'm not making any money from this, and I'm about to get booted from my apartment."
According to the newspaper, New York City's health department told Columbia that student housing could not be used for commercial activity.
"I had university administrators on my wait list that were totally trying to come through," Reider said. "They'd also be, like, please find a new place."
A Columbia spokeswoman said the university had no comment. A number for Reider could not be found.
