Francesa: Tuesday Was First Of Many Key Battles Between Mets, Nationals

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- It was a good night for the Mets and a bad one for the Yankees on Tuesday.

Mike Francesa opened his show Wednesday discussing the Amazin's 2-0 victory to open a three-game series against the rival Washington Nationals, as well as the Yankees' 5-3 loss in Arizona.

Francesa said the Mets' Noah Syndergaard was "tremendous" in his duel against the Nationals' Max Scherzer.

But he noted that the two teams have a lot more battles ahead.

"Bottom line is this teams are going to be seeing a lot of each other," he said. "There's a natural rivalry there. There's a great deal of rivalry there. They're going to fight it out all the way. They're both, I think, going to make the playoffs, and that's going to make for a very, very big year. And that was the first of many, many battles that they will do this year."

The Yankees, meanwhile, fell to 4-12 on the road.

"They just cannot win away from home," Francesa said. "And they have already started to dissipate what they gained with that homestand, where they won three straight series, where they showed some life."

Francesa said manager Joe Girardi may decide to "unleash" his big three relievers -- Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman -- to help secure a victory Wednesday night.

"You can have (Nathan) Eovaldi go pitch five innings, and if Joe wants, he can absolutely unleash these guys on the Diamondbacks tonight to gain any win," he said.
