Report: Knicks, Jeff Hornacek Agree To Deal To Make Him Head Coach

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Knicks and former Phoenix Suns coach Jeff Hornacek have reportedly reached an agreement on a contract that would make him the Knicks' new head coach.

According to the New York Daily News' Frank Isola, a deal has been reached in principle but no official announcement is expected Thursday.

Multiple reports surfaced Wednesday night saying the Knicks were planning to hire Hornacek and had begun notifying other candidates for the job about their intention.

A former All-Star guard with the Suns, Hornacek, 53, returned to his old team in 2013 as coach and went 101-112 in 2½ seasons there. He, however, never reached the playoffs, and his won-loss percentage declined each season. The Suns fired Hornacek in February. Before becoming Phoenix's head coach, Hornacek was an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz.

The Houston Rockets also interviewed Hornacek, and the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies were also interested in him, according to various reports.

The Knicks also reportedly interviewed former Cavaliers coach David Blatt and ex-Pacers coach Frank Vogel and were considering promoting Kurt Rambis, who served as interim coach after Derek Fisher was fired in February.

New York fired Derek Fisher in February after he went 23-31 this past season. His career record with the Knicks was 40-96.

Rambis was named the interim head coach and went 9-19 the rest of the season.

Isola reported that Hornacek considered hiring Rambis, a former teammate, on his staff in Phoenix, and there's still a chance Rambis could remain on the Knicks' staff.
