Boy Hospitalized After Falling Down Brooklyn Elevator Shaft

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A boy has been injured after falling down an elevator shaft in Brooklyn.

Police told 1010 WINS that shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, a 4-year-old boy was on an elevator on the third floor when he fell through the gap between the wall and the elevator, dropping some 50 feet.

It happened at 841 Union St. in Park Slope.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the building is a parking garage and the elevator transports cars up and down through several levels.

Sources said the child's family had forgotten something on the third floor, and the boy fell while his father was getting something out of the car.

The boy was taken to Methodist Hospital where he was being treated for traumatic injuries and was in critical condition.

An inspector with the department of buildings was speaking with a manager inside on Wednesday night.

There is a fire station across the street from the scene of the accident, so crews were able to respond and rescue the child quickly.
