5 Things Matt Harvey May Have Done To Help Improve His Pitching
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Matt Harvey finally looked like his old self Monday, tossing seven scoreless innings in a win over the Chicago White Sox.
Of course, Harvey entered that game at the lowest point of his career, with a 3-7 record, a 6.08 ERA and constant chatter about booting him from the Mets' rotation.
So how did he turn it around? Here are five things we believe he might have tried.
1. He Turned To Bartolo
With so much talk of "the Dark Knight" having packed on some extra pounds lately and how that might be contributing to his poor performance and consequently his growing unpopularity with fans, Harvey thought he would seek guidance from the most beloved Met of all: 285-pound Bartolo Colon. "Big Sexy" shared his tips for dieting and working out, and it instantly made a difference.
2. He Found A Good Luck Charm
Hoping to improve his luck, Harvey began sleeping with a lock of Noah Syndergaard's golden hair under his pillow. Shhh! Don't tell "Thor." He has no idea this is happening.
3. He Went To A Yankees Game
During a recent off day, Harvey discreetly attended another Yankees game. After watching the Bronx Bombers try to play baseball for three hours, he left feeling a thousand times more confident about his own ability.
4. He's Taking Fewer Bathroom Breaks
Sure, after a health scare this spring (seriously, thank goodness he was OK), the doctors told Harvey to make sure he urinates more frequently. But you do the math: 2.53 ERA when holding it in vs. 6.09 ERA when not. That can't be a coincidence, right?
5. He Sought Spiritual Guidance, Sort Of
A friend of Harvey's suggested he see a guru to help snap him out of his funk. But only halfway paying attention to the conversation while shoe shopping, Harvey misunderstood and ended up watching a crappy Mike Myers movie instead. Yet somehow it worked. So this week Harvey plans to watch "Shrek the Halls."
