VIDEO: White-Naped Crane Chick Makes Debut At Bronx Zoo
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Bronx Zoo is welcoming a new addition.
A baby crane is now on display along with its parents at the zoo.
The white-naped crane chick hatched this spring.
The birds, which are native to East Asia, are losing their wetland habitats to agriculture. The species is considered to be "vulnerable," with about 5,500 to 6,500 cranes living in the wild, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo.
The cranes are part of the WCS's "Species Survival Plan," which is described as "a cooperative breeding program designed to enhance the genetic viability of animal populations in zoos and aquariums."
The Bronx Zoo is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Click here to plan your visit.
