Police In Westchester Uncover Alleged Theft Ring But Are Unsure Who Suspects In Custody Are

HARRISON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- It started with the theft of a single Louis Vuitton bag -- and it led to the discovery of more luxury bags, belts, shoes, stolen credit cards, phony IDs, $15,000 in cash and the arrest of three people.

Harrison police Chief Anthony Marraccini told CBS2's Tony Aiello that on Sunday someone popped the lock on a luxury car and stole the Vuitton bag. Surveillance video at the Purchase Community Center showed the suspects casing cars in the parking lot.

Harrison has technology to read license plates of every vehicle that rolls through town. Police then tracked the suspects to a Queens hotel and found the stash of items purchased with stolen money and credit cards.

Harrison police say the suspects had $4,000 worth of iTunes cards -- purchased with stolen credit cards -- typically resold at a 50 percent discount.

The three suspects have passports from Chile. But after running names and checking fingerprints, police said they don't know who the suspects are or what country they're from.

"We believe that the documents that they got into our country with could very well be fraudulent," Marraccini said.

Cops believe the suspects are part of an international ring that can make phony IDs and clone credit cards. They're working with the feds to dig deeper -- with an eye on more arrests.

"This is something that started off simple and grew into what we believe is part of a major crime ring that's going up and down the Eastern Seaboard," Marraccini said.
