Seen At 11: Safety Apps Like 'Companion' Serve As Digital Security Guards

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- They are being called 'must have' apps for college students. Technology is being used to turn smartphones into personal security guards.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reported, it's bringing one New Jersey family peace of mind.

Allie Wahl, 20, is often faced with late night journeys all alone.

She recently started using a safety app that gives her what she calls a digital escort.

"You have someone walking there with you, but virtually," she said.

The app is called 'Companion' but there are other apps including 'Rave Guardian' and "Live Well/Vivir Bien' that are growing on popularity especially on college campuses.

"Someone knows where you are," she said.

Allie selects someone from her contacts, typically a friend, but this time her mom Karen who is notified when Allie steps out.

"It gives me peace of mind," Karen said.

When Allie hits end, her mom is automatically notified that she made it home safe and sound.

Allie's other option is to select, 'I feel nervous' which works as a panic button.

Security experts say the apps aren't perfect, and users should make sure a smartphone has a full enough charge.

Digital and social media expert Sree Sreenivasan said no app can replace good communication.

"If you get in the habit that your family and your children are very comfortable talking to you in real life, they'll also be comfortable sharing information digitally with you as well," he said.

Allie and her mom said their already close bond is strengthened with the help of this technology.
