Police: Long Island Man Seriously Hurt After Firework Detonates In Hand

WYANDANCH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man suffered serious injuries to his fingers when police said a firework went off in his hand.

It happened Thursday night as several people were setting off fireworks in front of an auto repair shop on Wyandanch Avenue in Wyandanch, police said.

The 35-year-old man lost two fingers when police said a mortar firework he lit detonated in his hand.

"The mortar exploded in his hand, severing two of his fingers, severely injuring another finger and partially severing a fourth finger," Police Chief Stewart Cameron told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Cameron said the Suffolk County police just held a demonstration on how the public should leave fireworks to the professionals.

"Clearly, this individual is a classic example of that," he said. "With severed fingers -- disabled for the rest of his life."

Police also reminded residents that the use and possession of fireworks, including sparklers, is illegal in Suffolk County.

So far, no charges against the man have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
