Local Professional Women's Football Team 1 Win Away From League's Version Of Super Bowl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A local women's football team is one win away from their version of the Super Bowl.

CBS2's Steve Overmyer reported the New York Sharks, the longest running franchise in the Independent Women's Football League, have a playoff game in Minnesota on Saturday.

One of the stars of the team is linebacker Gabby Farrell.

"People do tell me that I look like a superwoman because I fly around the field," Farrell said. "I feel fearless when I put my pads on. It's like my power suit."

When she's not playing professional football, Farrell works full-time as a personal trainer. Her real-life personality belies her competitiveness.

"She's very soft spoken and a little sweetheart," Sharks assistant coach Collette Smith said. "She puts the helmet and hits that field it's lights out."

Farrell's love for football began when she was a cheerleader.

"I was sitting on the sidelines not enjoying myself, and they looked like they were having a great time," she said. "That's exactly what I want to be doing. So next year, I was on the team."

Farrell played on the boys team through middle school and stopped when she got to high school. However, she got the last laugh as she's the only one from those teams playing professionally.

"You really can do anything you want, and it doesn't matter your gender, your age, who says what," Farrell explained. "That's something a lot more people need to believe in themselves, especially at a younger age."

Farrell was an all-star as a rookie and now she's the team leader of the top-ranked defense in her second year.
