Bronx Teen Arrested Following Alleged BB Gun Attack On EMTs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A BB gun attack on an Emergency Medical Technician has put many on edge, especially in the wake of the Dallas police shootings.

CBS2's Christine Sloan was on the scene when police arrested a 15-year-old they said fired a BB gun out of the 3rd floor window of a building in the Bronx.

The shots struck an EMT sitting in the passenger's seat of a FDNY ambulance. The shooter missed the driver by inches because he happened to be leaning forward while the ambulance was stopped at a light on 163rd Street.

The shots left the EMT bruised under the right arm, another BB pierced the door frame of the ambulance.

"He said he was just messing around and didn't mean to hit anybody," Captain Louis De Ciglie, NYPD, said.

Police believe the teen got the BB gun from a friend, but he wouldn't say who owns it.

Residents who live in the building -- a former homeless shelter -- said the teen has emotional problems.

"Everything is a joke to him," Crystal Merritt said, "When I first met him he was troublesome, but after a year he calmed down. This was from left field."

Police said what the teen did was not connected to other BB gun incidents in the area.

"With what is happening in the country it is very scary, but I believe this is an isolated incident," Captain De Ciglie said.

Police remain vigilant, and took the teen into custody immediately. The NYPD said it's illegal to own a BB gun in New York City.
