Long Island Immigrants Calling On Local Officials To Rally Against Trump

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- A group of immigrants said they need elected officials on Long Island to stand behind them and not support Donald Trump.

Walter Barrientos from Make The Road New York told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that there are men and women in the Patchogue community who are afraid to voice their concerns over the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. He said some are afraid of what will happen to them if they speak up.

"This area is an area where we have seen trucks with KKK signs recently. Where we have seen a lot of people come out and support Donald Trump, because he had a fundraiser in the same town," Barrientos said.

He is calling on elected officials who are supporting Trump to instead support Latino communities on Long Island.

"It's just sad to me that people who are members of the community, young people and parents who ought to be able to in an election year see themselves represented in the process and participate in the process, feel afraid to leave their homes," he said.
