Report: Jets To Sign Former Ravens And Jaguars RB Bernard Pierce

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Jets are expected to add some veteran experience to their backfield.

According to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, New York intends to sign former Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars running back Bernard Pierce.

A former third-round pick out of Temple in 2012, Pierce is a bruiser with speed who will replace backup Zac Stacy, who is being waived after failing his training camp physical, ESPN's Adam Caplan reported.

The Jets' starting backfield figures to showcase veterans Matt Forte and Bilal Powell. Khiry Robinson, who was placed on the active/PUP list Wednesday after suffering a broken leg with New Orleans last season, is expected to be the third back. Pierce, who was suspended by the NFL for the first two games of the 2016 season for undisclosed reasons, has the ability to eventually steal some carries, provided, of course, he makes the final roster.

Pierce, listed at 6 feet and 215 pounds, enjoyed his best season as a rookie with the Ravens, rushing for 532 yards and 4.9 per carry. Over his career, the 25-year-old back has 1,345 yards on the ground, plus 32 receptions and 171 yards as a receiver.

The Jets report to training camp Wednesday and begin practicing Thursday.
