3 Generations Of Doctors Deliver 3 Generations Of Family's Babies

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- Every baby delivery is special, but it was extra special for one infant who was born this week.

The doctor who delivered the baby also delivered that baby's mother. That doctor's father delivered the baby's grandmother.

CBS2's Raegan Medgie got a closer breakdown of the unique family bond.

Benjamin Scherer is the latest addition to a very unique family tree made up of a family from Long Island and a family of doctors.

"Back in 1958, Kathy was delivered by my father and he was the first of this generation," Dr. Steven Sherwin of Winthrop-University Hospital said.

In 1986, it was time for Kathy to have her baby.

"Kathy came to me as a gynecology patient and when Kathy became pregnant, I took care of her and I delivered Elyse," Sherwin said.

Now all grown up, it was Elyse's turn to bring a beautiful and healthy baby into the world.

"Feeling great, I still hear mom and I think you're speaking to my mom, I feel wonderful," she said.

Sherwin was there and so was his daughter, Dr. Alyse Sherwin.

"This was not planned, she went into labor the day I was on call and my father was on call as well, so we delivered her together," Alyse Sherwin said.

"It's a family thing and it's wonderful," Kathy Levenson said.

Dr. Andrew Sherwin delivered Kathy Levenson, Dr. Andrew had a son, Dr. Steven Sherwin, who delivered Kathy's daughter Elyse. Dr. Steven Sherwin and his daughter, Dr. Alyse Sherwin, both delivered Elyse's baby, Benjamin Scherer, On Thursday.

"To continue on this generational linkage between my mother, myself and now my son-- in between three generations of the Sherwin family-- is just remarkable," Elyse Scherer said.

You might also notice that Dr. Alyse and new mother Elyse have the same name. They were also born just three weeks apart.

The doctors and families are hoping to continue the unique family tree.

"Now we are the proud third generation to deliver three generations of this family so we are very, very proud and hopefully we'll be around for the fourth generation," Dr. Steven Sherwin said.

What started as a doctor-patient relationship in 1958 has grown into a family affair that continues to blossom.
