Massive Queens Warehouse Fire Under Control

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Hundreds of firefighters and emergency workers have contained a massive blaze inside in a warehouse in Queens.

Firefighters remained on the scene Thursday morning putting out hot spots after bringing the fire under control around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The blaze broke out around 7:30 p.m. at the building on 37th Street in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Images from the scene showed big billows of black smoke rising above railyards adjacent to the burning building.

Fire officials said materials inside the warehouse helped fuel the flames.

"It had a lot of wood, a lot of lacquers, thinners, paint in the shop which lead to a quick fire spread," said Chief of Department James Leonard.

Leonard said more than 250 firefighters and EMS workers responded to the blaze. He said four firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The warehouse is listed as New York Custom Interior Millwork Corporation, a family-owned woodwork and interior design company.

Leonard said the millwork factory was destroyed, but firefighters were able to save three large businesses. No employees were inside the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
