Christie Signs Bill To Require Diversity Training For N.J. Police Officers

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- All police officers in New Jersey will undergo cultural diversity training under a bill signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday.

As WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported, the new law came after Christie vetoed a more sweeping proposal that would have required local police departments to develop their own diversity training catered toward their communities.

The bill signed Tuesday requires the state Department of Law and Public Safety to develop cultural diversity training materials and an online tutorial for local police chiefs – who themselves are required to draft a cultural diversity action plan.

The bill would also require a state review of every fatal shooting and custody death.
