Mets' Wheeler Headed Back To Doctor With Elbow Setback
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Zack Wheeler is headed back to the doctor.
The Mets pitcher will visit orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday or Monday after he experienced discomfort and soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow, manager Terry Collins said. The issue cropped up after Wheeler made his first rehab appearance for the Class-A St. Lucie Mets on Aug. 6. He pitched one inning in that game, allowing an unearned run, no hits and one walk.
He hasn't not been able to throw since.
"We're concerned about it," Collins told reporters Friday, according to the New York Daily News. "As we know, there are no guarantees when you have these operations that everybody's going to bounce back from them."
The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery on the elbow in March 2015. The Mets had hoped he would be available for the second half of this season.
It's not clear whether he will pitch again in 2016.
