Crews Repair Water Main Break In Hoboken

HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A water main break in Hoboken sent water gushing into the street early Wednesday morning.

The 16-inch main broke around 4 a.m. at the intersection of 1st and Harrison streets, flooding parts of the roads and leaving many in the area with low water pressure or none at all.

"Got three drops, that's about it," resident John Caveney told CBS2's Andrea Grymes. "Thank God we had water in the refrigerator. If we didn't have that, there would be nothing to drink."

"It's just totally unreliable," Hoboken resident Vishal Khubani said. "It's always a headache."

Most of the water on the street receded by 7 a.m. and a spokesman for the mayor said water pressure was returning to normal, Grymes reported.

Suez Water said it has fixed the busted main and thanked customers for their patience.

Earlier this month, the Hoboken City Council approved a $5.2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the city's aging water main system.

The announcement came after a series of water main breaks earlier this year and in 2015. Back in March, a sinkhole swallowed a car after a large main broke on First Street near Clinton Street.
