Reports: Mets Place Steven Matz On Disabled List

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets have placed starting pitcher Steven Matz on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, according to multiple reports. The move was made retroactive to Aug. 15.

Citing people familiar with the situation, Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball and WFAN reported that an exam by team doctors and an MRI on Monday revealed that Matz has a mild shoulder strain and rotator cuff irritation but no structural damage.

It's not clear how long Matz is expected to be out.

The Mets have called up right-hander Robert Gsellman from Triple-A Las Vegas, SNY reported.

The rookie left-hander was scratched from his last scheduled start after complaining of shoulder discomfort. He has also battled a large bone spur in his elbow this season.

Matz is 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA. In his last start, on Aug. 14 against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field, the the Long Island native carried a no-hitter into the eight inning.

The Mets (62-62) enter Tuesday night's game at St. Louis trailing the Cardinals by 4½ games for the second wild-card spot in the National League.
