NYPD: Suspects Take Vodka, Tablet And Minivan From Indonesian Consulate

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are trying to find two suspects who they said stole electronics, alcohol, a vehicle and other items from the Indonesian Consulate in Manhattan.

Investigators said the suspects, a man and a woman, broke into the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia on East 68th Street between 5th and Madison avenues through an unlocked side door.

It happened around 1 a.m Monday, about an hour after the security guard left his post, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.

The two were seen on surveillance video walking through the building. At one point, the young man looks right at the camera. He is then seen leading the way inside as the woman follows.

When Consulate General Benny Siahaan arrived to work Monday morning, he noticed the tan 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan, used for diplomatic business, wasn't parked in its usual spot.

"We asked our staff, nobody took it, nobody used it," he told Doris. "So then we were sure somebody took it."

Police said the suspects snatched the keys to the minivan and used it as their get-away vehicle. They also stole a case of vodka, a Samsung tablet and a suitcase full of clothing, police said.

Siahaan said the tablet was a personal device.

"There's not classified information out there, because it's personal," he said.

The Consulate General doesn't believe there was any political motivation behind the theft,  but said the staff feels violated.

"We were very surprised and disturbed," he said.

The Indonesian Consulate is looking into extending the security guard's shift overnight to prevent more break-ins.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for the stolen minivan and the two suspects.

The male suspect is described by police as Hispanic, between the ages of 18 and 25. He was seen wearing gray sweatpants and dark-colored sandals.

The female suspect is described by police as Hispanic, between the ages of 18 and 25 with black hair. She was last seen wearing a black and white striped tank top, dark-colored pants and white sneakers.
