Nassau County Cracks Down On Drunk Driving, Boating Ahead Of Labor Day Weekend

MINEOLA (CBSNewYork) –– Long Island authorities are stepping up patrols to crack down on drunk drivers and drunk boaters in Nassau County.

Authorities say drunk drivers and drunk boaters take the lives of innocent people, WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported.

“Imploring people to think before they put the key into the ignition — either into a car, or into a boat,” Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “I have spent countless hours speaking to family members who are impacted by drunk drivers of all kinds, and sometimes I wonder if someone who decides to drunk drive could actually speak to these family members and see the impact of their actions.”

Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said authorities have a zero tolerance policy for those who operate a vehicle or boat while intoxicated.

“If you drink and drive, not only do you risk hurting or killing yourself or someone else, but you will be arrested in Nassau County,” Krumpter said.

Krumpter says there will be increased police patrols on the streets and waterways for the Labor Day weekend holiday, 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported.

This year, there have been 13 fatalities caused by incident involving drunk drivers in Nassau County..
