Survey: NYC-Metro Area 2nd Worst In Nation For Homeowners

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new report confirms what a lot of New York City homeowners already knew: it's not easy living in the Big Apple.

The report by BankRate.com finds New York-metro areas is the second-worst in the country for homeowners. The study looked at factors like home affordability, property taxes, as well as energy and maintenance costs.

"I don't think it's any secret that home prices in New York-metro area are really super high," BankRate.com analyst Claes Bell told 1010 WINS. "Even when you consider the fact that people in New York make more money than people in other places do on average, it's still going to be a struggle for the average person making the average income in that area to be able to afford home payments."

He believes in order for costs to come down, more housing needs to be made available.

The worst city in the country for homeowners is Hartford, Connecticut.

Portland, Oregon, Phoenix and Atlanta took top honors as the best metropolitan areas to own a home in.
