Chelsea Residents Finally Allowed Back Home Following Bombing

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents of West 23rd Street in Chelsea are being allowed to return to their apartments following the bombing on Saturday night.

CBS2's Ali Bauman reported residents need identification and a piece of mail to prove to authorities they live in one of the buildings on West 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues to get back home.

The street was barricaded all day as investigators swept the scene.

"My office is around here. I stayed in my office. I'm just going home now," Ori Goldman said.

Dan Jordan said he is unable to get to his car. He lives in the Upper East Side, but parked here for a movie on Saturday night.

"I'm here saying I need to go to work tomorrow, I need my car," Jordan said.

However, without proof of residency, drivers can't get through.

"Officially, it's supposed to be moved by 7 a.m., so if they wrap this up at 3 a.m., and I'm not here by 7 a.m., I'm gonna get a ticket," Jordan said.

Denise Coles is also dealing with the same situation.

"I am waiting here to see when I can get my car. It's a rental and it was supposed to be returned today," Coles said.

Coles said she saw smoke and something that looked suspicious after parking her car on 23rd Street at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"There's a guy running with a bag and he did not look like he was running because he shouldn't have gotten that far from when I heard the boom, but he was already here and far when he ran past me. He had on all black and that bag, I remember that," Coles said, adding that she felt compelled to chase him.

More and more people are being let in as the night goes on. Previously, residents had to be escorted by an officer and now they can walk through on their own.

Even delivery people are coming through as long as they have an order on their receipt.

It is not known when the road will be reopened.
