RNC Chair: Former GOP Candidates Could Be Penalized For Not Endorsing Trump

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday they will “look at” possibly penalizing former primary challengers for not backing nominee Donald Trump.

Speaking to CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Priebus said the RNC will “evaluate” the nomination process if Trump’s former primary opponents want to run again in 2020 or 2024.

“Those people need to get on board,” Priebus said, referring to Ohio Gov. John Kasish, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. “And if they’re thinking they’re going to run again someday, I think that we’re going to evaluate … the nomination process and I don’t think it’s going to be that easy for them.”

When asked if there would be penalties for those primary challengers who have not endorsed Trump, the RNC chairman said it’s something they will “look at,” but nothing has been decided.

Last summer, the Republican candidates signed a so-called “loyalty pledge” that they would back the eventual nominee, “regardless of who it is.”

“People in our party are talking about what we’re going to do about this. I mean, there’s a ballot access issue in South Carolina. In order to be on the ballot in South Carolina, you actually have to pledge your support to the nominee, no matter who that person is,” Priebus explained on “Face the Nation.” “So what’s the penalty for that? It’s not a threat, but that’s the just question that we have a process in place.”

Priebus continued, “And if a private entity puts forward a process and has agreement with the participants in that process, and those participants don’t follow through with the promises that they made in that process, what should a private party do about that if those same people come around in four or eight years?”

A new CBS News poll reveals Trump and Hillary Clinton are tied at 42 percent across battleground states.

How low can you go, it’s insane. Aren’t we in a Freedom of Speech country and I believe that means the right to choose.

  2. Yasky says:

it is about time to make those politician paid for their broken promises. Wait? Did I say “broken promises”? Well, that is pretty much sum it up. The politician’s primary job is to lie and making broken promises, and also getting away with murder (Hint: Killary).

Preibus’ interview on Face the Nation demonstrated no credibility on his part. As Chair of the Republican Party he surely wants to see a united front, but if he had the backbone he should have had during the pre convention period we moght not be in the mess we are today and he certainly is not exemplifying leadership now; he should not be threatening those who are sticking by their principles. He is an embarrassment, as is Trump, and he and our party will regret their actions (perhaps not regret it in November, but over the next four years). It is not time to MOVE ON just because Preibus wants the easy route and his defense of Trump now is not a step toward unification, .Rather, it is drawing the lines deeper at least for those of us (Republicans) who have not jumped on the Trump board (and my gut feeling is that percentage is much higher than the 12% highlighted in the media).

Adios Reince. Poor Reince, he’s trying to sell a pig in a poke as a wedding cake. Kasich in particular and several other Republican candidates had the experience, intelligence, and sober temperament to be President of the United States, all the things Trump does not possess. Every stable thinking American; Independent, Republican, and Democrat understands and knows Trump is unprepared, unequipped, and emotionally unfit to be President. But unfortunately this election the gullible and uneducated ignorant intolerant wing of the Republican Party became its majority and elected Trump their candidate. If the Republican Party can withstand this bumpy detour and survive, hopefully they can field a qualified candidate again in 4 years. In the mean time god help us.

I think that they should be fined or give up some of there benefits. They would expect the same endorsement if they were in the same position. They are just being sore losers! Anyone would be better than Hillary, she has have over 30 years to make more of an impact than she has so far! We don’t need 4 more years of limping along. We need to take a stand to uphold the American way of life and that is with tough polices and yes stepping on toes, and getting rid of anyone who isn’t believing of our values and willing to sacrifice for our freedom.

lol, will there be a public flogging? this guy is going to get kicked out after the election

  7. Reince Priebus using threats! That is a very Trump thing to do. Has that idiot Priebus thought of taking a head count of how many individuals have left the GOP? I’m sure he has some idea as to the number but he will not admit as it would be a reflection on him and the other idiots who opened the door to let that mentally challenged person be the nominee.

  8. Gabe Mavern says:

GOP is let Trump win by allowing 17 candidates. Now we’re stuck with this idiot Trump. Perhaps what we really need is new direction with the RNC…

  9. Kate says:

Yet another reason to be proud to be registered as not affiliated with either political party.

    1. The Facts says:

Likewise. But unless we elect Trump we will end up with the Hildabeast.
