Tim Tebow's Mets Jersey Already A Top Seller

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mets general manager Sandy Alderson insisted earlier this month that the Mets didn't sign Tim Tebow in a bid to sell more merchandise.

But it isn't hurting.

On the same day that Tebow participated in his first Instructional League workout with the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Florida, his jersey was the top seller among Mets at MLBShop.com and Fanatics.com. The No. 15 pinstriped replica home jerseys sell for $119.99 on both sites.

Tebow's jersey was also being sold Monday to adoring fans who showed up at the Mets facility to watch his first practice.

Hoping to begin a second act to his pro sports career, the Heisman Trophy-winning and former NFL quarterback worked out for baseball scouts last month. The Mets then signed him to a minor league contract that included a $100,000 bonus.

Generally, teams are not allowed to sell jerseys of players not on the 40-man roster because they are not considered part of the union. But sources told ESPN that Tebow signed a bridge agreement with official jersey maker Majestic Athletic, allowing his merchandise to be sold before he reaches the majors.
