EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- At least one person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 3 in New Jersey early Sunday morning.

According to East Rutherford Police, four cars were involved in the crash just after 3 a.m.

A 24-year-old man was killed, police said. Four others were rushed to Hackensack Medical Center, three with serious injuries.

Authorities say the 24-year-old man killed in the crash was driving one of the vehicles and apparently was traveling alone. His name has not been released.

Three other people suffered serious injuries in the crash, while another person was also hurt. All four were being treated at a hospital, but further details on their conditions were not disclosed.

Authorities closed a section of the eastbound stretch of the highway near MetLife Stadium while they investigated the crash.

After being shut down for hours, the eastbound lanes were open again by 11:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
