Steve Smith, Melissa Mark-Viverito Among Those Voicing Outrage After New Details Emerge About Josh Brown Domestic Abuse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The newly released documents of Giants kicker Josh Brown admitting to physically and emotionally abusing his former wife is drawing a strong reaction from the public.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. issued a strong message to Brown on Twitter on Thursday.

"You know what if your ex-wife was my daughter yo ASS would be on IR.... what a shame NFL acts like it cares," Smith wrote.

New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito called on the NFL to increase its punishment for Brown, who has already served a one-game suspension stemming from his May 2015 arrest on a domestic violence charge. Prosecutors did not proceed with the case, citing insufficient evidence.

"The NFL has an abysmal record on standing up for players at the expense of the women they abuse," Mark-Viverito said in a statement. "The Giants can not continue to normalize and promote domestic violence by allowing Josh Brown to take the field after only a one game suspension. It is insane that the National Football League punishes a player more harshly for using drugs than for attacking his wife. ... The Giants owe their fans, nearly half of whom are women, better."

WFAN's Mike Francesa called the NFL's credibility into question after the league blamed police for stonewalling its investigation.

"This is the investigation that you did?" Francesa said. "Why would anybody take any investigation you ever do seriously then? There were written journals you didn't even know about!

"The NFL continues, especially under this commissioner's leadership, to absolutely drop the ball on every one of these cases. You know why? Because they never tell the truth. They lie their way through it every time. And when they get caught, they just spin some more lies."

Meanwhile, plenty of Twitter users were outraged that Brown received what was, in their opinion, a light punishment initially and that he still had a job as of Thursday afternoon.
