3 Killed When Car Crashes Into Tree, Catches Fire In Orange, N.Y.

ORANGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Three people were killed when a car crashed into a tree and caught fire on a residential street in Orange, New York early Saturday morning.

The Essex County prosecutor's office said the 2006 Chevy Malibu hit a tree at Tremont and Mosseood avenues shortly before 1:30 a.m.

All three people inside were killed.

Neighbors said they awoke to a house-rattling bang and saw flames coming from the front of the car, CBS2's Ali Bauman reported.

"It sounded like a tree falling on a house," neighbor Jeff Jones told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern. "A giant boom."

One witness said he didn't see anyone get out of the car and can't imagine how they could have.

"It was completely in flames, flames and smoke," George Campbell said. "It's instant, nobody could survive that. It was quiet, there was not a soul, not a sound, and one of the police officers sawed off the door and one of them suggested there were three people in there."

The victims have not been identified.
