'The Guy Jumped Through The Roof,' Burglary Caught On Camera At Brooklyn Start-Up

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A thief in Brooklyn saw a roof and an opportunity -- punching his way into the offices of a tech start-up.

As CBS2's Jessica Moore reported, cameras caught him heading inside.

The dangling derelict made his way into Nooklyn's headquarters in northern Flatbush around 2 a.m. last Thursday.

"Yes it was right here that the guy jumped through the roof," Harely Courts said.

Courts is the CEO of Nooklyn, an app for millennial apartment hunters.

"I was in San Francisco for some meetings and I woke up to one of my partners sending me the video of this guy jumping through our roof," Courts said.

Once he mustered up the courage to jump, Courts said the thief cased the joint before stealing a desktop Apple computer, and computer parts worth several thousand dollars.

Apparently fancy computer equipment wasn't enough. The CEO said the sweet tooth swindler also made off with handfuls of Jolly Ranchers.

"We give welcome boxes to all of our clients. They always include candy," Courts explained.

The man wasn't as interested in the jumbo sized bag of Dum Dums, but that's beside the point.

How exactly did the brazen burglar manage to cut through a metal roof?

"That was open. There was a vent that was there before. I don't know what material was there before they patched it over, but apparently he could just bang through it, and jump through the ceiling," Courts said.

The entrepreneur who has endured his share of hard knocks offered some advice.

"I think you grow from these types of incidents. For us, I think how are we going to make everything better in the future?" Courts said.

The company's first step -- installing alarm systems and motion detectors to stop future filchers in their tracks.

Police described the thief as a black man in his 40s, last seen wearing a black hooded sweater, dark coat, and dark pants.
