CBS2 Exclusive: Video Shows Attack On 88-Year-Old Woman On Brooklyn Street
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An 88-year-old woman remained hospitalized Monday after someone pushed her to the ground, breaking her wrist and her shoulder in an attack that has left many people outraged in Brooklyn.
As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported, exclusive video showed the sickening sight around 5 p.m. this past Friday.
"Who the hell would do that to an 88-year-old woman?" said Dennis Deredito of Sheepshead Bay.
The exclusive surveillance video obtained by CBS2 News showed the female attacker shoving the 88-year-old grandmother, Klara Brovarnik, as she walked in front of Ester's Food supermarket at 3664 Nostrand Ave. in Sheepshead Bay.
The woman shoved Brovarnik from behind and knocked her to the ground, police said.
The impact resulted in a broken wrist, a broken shoulder and perhaps a broken hip, according to the victim's family.
"Oh my goodness, that's terrible," a local resident said.
The attacker then added insult to injury, smiling as she ran away from the scene of the crime.
The victim's 96-year-old sister, Sher Tuntsya, was distraught and in tears.
"I have one sister -- one sister," Tuntsya said.
Tuntsya needed a friend to interpret for her as she cried.
"She's worries very, very much for her sister, because it's very, very important," the friend said.
The attack had many in the community beyond outraged.
"I'm upset, seriously," resident Natalia Demochko. "It's an old woman. Who could do that?"
"That's crazy," a resident said. "People have no respect for their elders."
"It really bothers me. I have a mother, I have a sister, a wife," one man added. "That person who did that is just a punk and needs to be dealt with... Let it be done to her grandmother and see how funny it is after that."
On the surveillance video, a Good Samaritan bystander is seen chasing the attacker down the street, try to stop her from getting away.
The suspect was described as a black or Hispanic female with a dark-colored ponytail and glasses. She was last seen wearing a gray hat, a white T-shirt, a gray sweatshirt, a beige sweater and brown work boots.
"Somebody beat up an old lady, they should rot in jail," Deredito said.
