Cashless Tolling Coming To Hugh L. Carey, Midtown Tunnels In 2017

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two New York City tunnels and all Metropolitan Transit Authority bridges will be switching to cashless tolling in January 2017.

E-Z Pass says the switch will eliminate the need for drivers to switch lanes to get to the right booth at the tolling plaza, which can often slow down traffic.

For those without E-ZPass, cameras will photograph the vehicle's license plate and a bill is then mailed to the vehicle owner.

Those who fail to pay five tolls over 18 months could have their vehicle registration suspended under a new state rule.

Cashless tolling is already in place on the Tappan Zee Bridge in Rockland County, as well as the Henry Hudson Bridge.
