Sources: Corrections Officer, Wife Shot In Suspected Home Invasion In Jamaica, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York State corrections officer and his wife were shot Sunday evening in a suspected home invasion in Jamaica, Queens, police sources said.

As CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported, police were still on the scene late Sunday night, trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Around 6:55 p.m., the suspects entered the home on Mathias Avenue near 163rd Street and shot the victims, police said.

A 58-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were shot, police said.

The man was shot numerous times in his torso, and when police arrived he was unconscious and unresponsive when police arrived, the NYPD said. Police said the woman was shot in the shoulder, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

A close family friend told CBS2 the couple who were shot had people over to their home Sunday evening. As they were saying goodbye outside, the neighbor said two men rolled up and opened fire, though it was not clear exactly why.

"A friend of hers had just left and the next thing you know, she said guns was out, and I guess from her, with the commotion in front of the house, the husband came to see what was going on and that's when he got shot," said a neighbor named Keenan.

Police said the men pushed their way into the house before opening fire.

A source close to the investigation told 1010 WINS that the man is a New York State corrections officer. Friends identified him as Henry Wright.

Police said the suspects fled after the shooting. One headed east on Mathias Avenue, the other west, police said.

The victims were being treated at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center late Monday. Keenan said he spoke to the female victim, who said she was OK. But her husband was in critical condition.

Police were still looking for the suspects late Sunday. They were described as two males wearing black hoodies and jeans, between the ages of 20 and 30.
