Taking videos is now a snap, and you don't have to pull out your smartphone. Spectacles from Snap are sunglasses that record 10-second videos for Snapchat. But snapping up a pair has been tricky -- they're only released in limited batches at special vending machines and pop-up store locations. Prices start at $130 a pair. If your New Year's resolution is to get into shape, the $150 Fitbit Charge 2 tracks your heart rate, sleep and steps on an easy-to-read screen.

"And it's got a really good community to tap into with Fitbit," CNET editor Scott Stein said. "And it works with Android and iOS. The only thing it doesn't have is water resistance."

Prices start at around $149.95, and the device is sold at some major retailers, including Walmart, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond. Visit their website for more.

High Fashion Options

Designer brands like Michael Kors and Fossil have released new lines of hybrid smart watches. Think of them as fitness trackers on an everyday watch.

"So a lot of them work similarly in that they pair with an app and then sync the data," Stein said.

You may find a higher price tag on these options. Michael Kors smart watches start at around $350, and Fossil watches vary depending on whether you choose their touch screen or tradition options.

The Vivomove, from Garmin, looks like a traditional watch, but also has the advantage of a good app. For kids, the $80 Vivofit Jr. not only tracks steps, but lets parents assign chores and rewards kids with virtual coins. Prices for the smart watch start at $149.99, but other options are available to suit your specific fitness need. See website for more.

Synch Your Smartphone

For hardcore fitness fanatics, the Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant for swimming, as is equipped with GPS, so you can track your steps without having to bring your cell phone along with you. The Apple Watch Series 1 has similar features without the water resistance properties. Prices for the Apple Watch 2 start at around $350.

Android users can check out the swim-friendly Samsung Gear S3 with GPS, starting at $299.

But before you invest, here's a few things to consider.

"Do you want it to feel like a mini phone on your wrist, or do you just wanna check a few things like quick texts, or even just track fitness and not worry so much about the rest?" Stein said.

And if the prices for wearable technology seem too costly, keep an eye out for discounts this holiday season.
