Spate Of Violence Leaves 3 Dead, 6 Hurt Across NYC In Less Than 24 Hours

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three people were killed and six others hurt in a wave of violence across the city Sunday.

The bloodshed began just after midnight when police say 31-year-old Delvin Martinez, the father of a 6-month-old baby, was stabbed to death during a fight after a soccer match at I.S. 71 in Williamsburg.

His family said he was trying to protect his younger brother, who was critically wounded. Police said 29-year-old Oscar Martinez suffered stab wounds to his torso, neck and face.

Shortly after noon Sunday, 21-year-old Eric Assanah was found shot to death in his Jamaica, Queens home. Police have arrested Jonathan Chan, 21, of Queens, in the case and charged him with second-degree murder, burglary and resisting arrest.

Four men were shot and wounded during an argument at a deli in Bushwick around 6 p.m.

In the same hour, 41-year-old Jose Morales was killed and a 25-year-old man was critically wounded in an argument in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx.

A woman was also shot in the leg at a bus stop in Fordham Manor.

Community advocate Tony Herbert said great police work is being overshadowed by gun violence.

"The problem is that all of the work that they're putting in at this time is being undermined by the fact that we still have illegal firearms on the street, and unfortunately we can't see the successes if people are still dying," Herbert told 1010 WINS.
