Bluetooth Speaker Bursts Into Flames On Girl's Bed In Cliffside Park

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) --  A Bluetooth speaker burst into flames on a girl's bed while she was listening to music Wednesday night.

Nichole Tatem's daughter was listening to music in her bedroom around 9 p.m. when the speaker began smoking and then burst into flames, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

"The resident there removed the device from the bed, brought it into the hallway where she used a bucket to extinguish the fire and the device," Deputy Chief Gregory Yfantis said.

Cliffside Park fire official Frank Poerio said it appears the rechargeable battery overheated.

"It melted part of it," he said. "If you would have let it go, it would have probably been completely destroyed."

Video posted online by Tatem showed the charred cylinder speaker.

"These devices, they are rechargeable batteries and there are times when they might malfunction and if you are there, you can prevent a major incident from occurring," Yfantis said. "We're just concerned, we want people to be vigilant when charging these kids of products."

Nobody was injured and there was no significant damage, CBS2 reported.

Fire officials have contacted the speaker's manufacturer.

The fire department is investigating.
