1 Dead In Early Morning Hit-And-Run In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One man is dead and another hurt after being hit by a vehicle early Monday morning in the Bronx.

It happened around 5:15 a.m. on Third Avenue near East 181st Street. Police said the two men were walking on Third Avenue when an SUV hit them.

Police said the 28-year-old man who died at the scene was killed immediately from the impact, apparently pinned between two vehicles.

"It's sad and it's scary cause I think of myself. That could happen to me," neighbor Carol Heard told CBS2's Reena Roy.

Another 24-year-old man was also hurt in the crash, somehow getting an ankle injury. Moments later, police say the driver and passengers inside the SUV simply got out and ran.

"It's terrible just leave a person dead there like that," said neighbor Milagros Candelarie. "I hope they catch them, whoever it is."

The second victim was taken across the street to Saint Barnabas Hospital, but is expected to be OK.

Police sources tell CBS2 they originally responded to reports of shots fired. Responding officers found a gun and bullet casings on the ground but it's unclear if anyone was shot.

Investigators are now combing the area for any clues leading them to the suspect.

"I hope his conscience get to him and he come forward," said Heard. "Or I hope they find him from cameras."

No arrests have been made as the investigation is ongoing.
