7-Year-Old Boy Hit, Killed By MTA Bus In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 7-year-old boy was hit and killed by an MTA bus Saturday afternoon in the Bronx.

It happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. near East 184th Street and Webster Avenue.

Police said the bus was driving south on Webster Avenue when it struck the child, who was riding a scooter.

The boy, identified as Shevon Bethea, of Brooklyn, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cellphone video shows family members frantic.

"I heard him yelling, "Oh my god, my son! Oh my god, my son!" witness Julie Sastre told CBS2's Reena Roy.

"I heard something go 'boom,' turn around, and then I saw the kid lying on the ground," another witness said. "The bus hit the kid. The bus hit the kid hard, too, because the kid flew… Next thing you know, the kid is dead."

"When I heard the big 'crack' sound, I ran to the window, and what I saw was the boy laying on the ground limp, he wasn't moving," said Sastre.

The 38-year-old driver stayed on the scene. He was seen with his head in his hands as he was questioned by investigators.

"The bus driver drove the kid to that corner underneath the bus. He didn't even know," Nesbit Otsaga said. "Somebody stopped the bus, said, 'yo, sir, somebody's under the bus, you hit a kid.'"

"That's my neighbor," he added. "That hurt so bad."

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
