A gigantic monster lands in the waters off Coney Island and then wreaks havoc on the city -- decapitating Lady Liberty, sending violent spider like mini-monsters into the subways and splitting the Brooklyn Bridge in half. Survivors end up running all over the city eventually trying to find shelter in Central Park (yea, that's smart). Cloverfield (credit: IMDB)

When astronaut Charlton Heston hurtles into space, he lands on what he thinks is a planet overrun by sentient apes. Humans are treated like cattle. Only at the end does he realize the horrid truth: he was on Staten Island all along. (credit: IMDB)

It's 1996 and aliens are out to get us, obviously. Super mega spaceships invade the skies, block out all the sunlight, and then pretty much destroy everything in sight. Luckily, the human race has Will Smith to save all of creation but not before those darn aliens send a huge fire ball through Manhattan destroying the Empire State Building along with a fleet of yellow cabs. Three hapless pseudo-scientists get in over their heads quickly when they decide to tangle with the supernatural. Leave it to Dan Aykroyd to come up with the true face of New York's destruction: the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. (credit: IMDB)

  1. Peter Crisitello says:

I can think of many more older disaster/sifi films from the 1950’s and 60’s that featured NY City. Harry Belafonte in The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959), Cecil Kellaway in The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), and Phyllis Coates in Invasion USA (1952) are just the ones off the top of my head.
