Nothing about the New York Mets on Monday resembled the second half of last season. Then again, opening day has often been their biggest highlight of the year.
SportsNet New York, better known as SNY, announced on Thursday that it has hired Valentine as an analyst for the Mets’ pre- and postgame shows before and after game telecasts.
“Right now, the way Valdespin has been swinging the bat in that spot, we’re leaning towards him,” Collins told WFAN host Mike Francesa on Wednesday. “As of right now, that’s what we’re looking at.”
The Yankees and Mets are among teams that are interested in outfielder Brennan Boesch, according to CBSSports.com/WFAN insider Jon Heyman.

There’s potential there. There’s a chance. There’s a job to be won for a player who was once a threatening major-league hitter — and could be again. And with the current state of this outfield, that hope and belief is all that Mets fans have right now.
Johan Santana will not make his first spring training appearance for the New York Mets this year until mid-March. Sandy Alderson said he didn’t think Santana will miss the start of the regular season, but said it was a possibility.
Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy has a strained muscle on his right side and is day to day after receiving a cortisone shot in New York.
“I’m not after Terry’s job,” Wally Backman said. “But my goal is definitely to manage in the big leagues.”
Coming off their fourth straight losing season, the Mets enter spring training with a projected rotation of Johan Santana, Jon Niese, Shaun Marcum, Matt Harvey and Dillon Gee, a quintet that combined to go 35-34 with a 3.26 ERA last season.
“I just wanted to let him know that he would be a great addition here, and he’d obviously be welcomed here,’’ Wright told the New York Post. “…I’ve always had great respect for him and the way he plays the game.”
The Amazin’s have three players on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospect List, each ranking in the top 30. Most notably are catcher Travis d’Arnaud (ranked sixth) — who was snatched up in the R.A. Dickey deal — and Zack Wheeler (ranked eighth).
Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte will not pitch for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, general manager Brian Cashman confirmed.
